Well still working on the new ignition for the Darmah so nothing to do with the 1199 but feel like part of the Ducati modified forum gang if I contribute something. Having coffee break at McDonald’s on the way to purchase some waterproof electrical connectors
Of course I am modifying some wiring on the old bike while I have it apart.
Some wires on this bike are 40 years old.
Here is picture of the bike on the lift with naked 1199S and the K1300S in the background 😊🇦🇺🏁

Still working on the SSD Darmah. I got the Silent-Hektik electronic ignition working fine. Fired up first hit of the starter. New JASO standard oil, new seals, clutch adjusted, a new gear lever return spring, new iridium spark plugs, new coils. and spark plug leads, new heat sheilding on on the ignition wiring coming out the case past the exhaust header for the horizontal cyclinder. There was some hesitation to return to idle properly so I suspected dirty carbs after eliminating caught throttle or choke cables. These cables run under the tank and when placing the tank on you can get them caught.

I decided to do a full carburettor rebuild and restoration. Almost there now. I purchased a 30 litre Ultrasonic cleaner and am still experimenting with different solutions. Used it to get most things about 70% clean but then went to hand or machine polishing. I also found via the Classic Italion Motorcycle association of Australia (CIMAA) of a vapour blaster in my area. He also does cerakote if I ever need it. All the internal brass jets and stainles adjustment screws etc I have hand finished. Here are a couple of pics. Note the appearance of the PHF32 Dellorto in the pic with all the small jets then see the difference after vapour blast. I was advised by the owner who did the treatment to carefully rinse the carb in fuel then carefully use HP air to blow out the medium which is glass finer than sand. I did this twice before I got all the medium out. Make sure you wear good sealing eye protection as you can feel the glass coming out when the air goes in. Glass is difficult to remove from the eyes as doctors cannot use a magnet to drag the fine particles out. Chalk and cheese is the result. I am very happy with that result. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy new year from down under. CheersPHF rebuild.jpgVapour Blast result.jpg

Just thought I would post about the great afternoon I had spending time with Andy7 from the forum here. I got to see his bike and watch him ride around the track. He was fast. He has some good knowledge about the whole track day thing so I picked up a few lessons. Later that evening there was some club racing with some very well know australian riders. It was a great way to spend an afternoon.

Fantastic racing indeed, very cool to see some of the young crop coming through. Plenty to look forward to in coming years at national and international level.
Certainly don’t feel too quick when those blokes are going round the outside of me 😂

Good morning Gentlemen,
Still working on the the old SSD Darmah. Yesterday took all my parts to get a quote for painting. When I stripped the fuel tank back to bare metal there was some previous damage hidden underneath but the good news is that is does not leak with all the body filler sanded off. The fairing, seatbase/tail unit, side covers, both wheels, will all be painted. New decals etc. It will sparkle when it comes back. I just splurged out and purchased some ceramic bearings for it. I fitted to the front wheel of the 1199S when I fitted the forged magnesium wheels to that bike. The friction difference is chalk and cheese. Gotta be worth one tenth of a HP right ? LOL . I will put some before and after photos later. Cannot wait to get this one finished to start back on the 1199.

Looking forward to seeing the results of the painting once it’s all back together Brad! Are you sticking with the stock colour scheme?

Yes will stick with the original colour. It’s all one metallic light blue and the decals add a dark blue.

Today I took all my brake calipers and the disc carriers off to get cerakoted. I have a bunch of little things like fuel taps and other things getting vapour blasted at the same place. I have ordered new caliber seal kits and pistons for all calipers, and also the master cylinders. Master Cylinders getting cerakote too. Have sent off to HEL to get some custom braided lines made up. New carbon ceramic brake pads on the way from Brembo and new pistons for all callipers.

What a pain it was getting the old pistons out of the calipers. Also getting a brand new set of cables made up to replicate the original. And got myself a nice new Shorai battery as well.

Purchased some T7075 aluminium stock and a good friend is going to machine up some front and rear axles for me. You can buy these but each about $200 AUD from GER. The stock cost me $50 AUD enough for two sets. Machining will be a slab. That will save a ton on weight and get the suspension working better.

Will do some polishing of the fork sliders today as I have plenty of access with the front guard, wheel and calipers off the bike.

Oh I forgot. I have ordered a 520 fromt sproket, 520 x ring chain and also a very nice Ultra light alloy polished sprocket from Sprocket Specialists. I have one already on the bike but it is in 530. Going to 520 saves a tone of weight.

I also have an idea for a custom CF part that I may try to make myself. I will keep that up my sleeve for another post.

The compressed air in the hole didn’t do the trick getting this pistons out?
Will be doing front endos like Miller with all the refurbishing 😁

I wish I had thought of that. I ended up just connecting one caliber at a time to one hose and just using brake fluid to push it out by pumping the lever. About an hour later I was having a bourbon with my neighbour (he owns two Hardly Dangerous bikes) and he says to me "Did you try your compressor". Live and learn.
I suppose that is the beauty of having a go yourself with stuff you get to learn so much. Next time compressed air with be my go to solution. (y)

A pleasant surprise
I started out putting in an electronic ignition in my Darmah back in June 22 and here I am still doing more. As mentioned before one thing led to another and here I am still renewing, restoring and generally mucking around with it. My goal with this bike is just to try to keep it as original as possible but also make it practical to ride. I am not really trying to make it lighter. I love doing that with the 1199S (that bike has more Ti on it than an F22). Anyway the pleasant surprise was that as I am rebuilding the brakes completely with new pistons and seals for the masters, I also ordered new pistons and seals for the calipers. The package from England arrived the other day and in it were 6 new pistons for the brakes. To my surprise check out the weights of old steel compared to what must be anodised aluminium.

This photo at 106.5 grams is an original 1978 era brembo piston from a P08 Caliper
IMG_6303.jpg

This photo is the replacement piston now for this caliper at 36.2 grams. Saving 70.3 grams per piston.
fullsizeoutput_24db.jpeg

So with 6 pistons all up a saving of 422 grams. Or nearly a pound for you chaps in the USA.
Last Tuesday I mailed some brake lines to be replicated into braided steel and they are already done and being posted back.
I dropped off all the old choke cables and carby cables and they are being remade to original specs.
I also ordered some CF which is going to be a bit of an experiment to see if I can make a part from it.

Anyway enough raving about an old motorcycle as soon as I am done I look forward to getting back to the Panigale.

Amazing progress in material choices and metallurgy since the 1970s... that is really amazing unsprung weight savings!
