My 899 track bike build “slow and on a budget”

Purchase in June 2020 from a friend who upgraded to a 959
Sitting in a hospital waiting for my son to be born
My friend called me and offer it to me at a really good price so I couldn’t say no.
this was after I had taken a break from motorcycles for 1 year.

A few days later I picked it up!

..this is when things changed from weekend canyon riding and ocasional track days to track only. On a sunday morning one of my best friends had a bad crash up in the canyons riding his 959
Unfortunately he didn’t make it..


after this i decided to stop riding on the street for a while at least on a sport bike and just do trackdays
So I started to remove stuff

One of my goals was to make it lighter
But I wasn’t just going to start ordering new parts so I started to look for used parts on forums, ebay etc
Bike already has full 70mm termignoni system
Previous owner had it polished so it has this weird gold color
Found a used OZ rear wheel for a good price and decided to buy it

After the first track day on street fairings
I started looking for used fairings and found a great deal on a set of sharkskins with aluminum front stay and air ducts and they were also selling an aluminum subframe from a 1199R
The 899 has a steel subframe which is very heavy

My rear shock was leaking so I just purchased a used shock from a 1199 and adjustable link from podium racing on eBay

Took a break from gutting my kitchen to work on my bike

Reading the forums “i blame the forums”
Decided to remove the ABS pump amd lines and ordered core moto T lines straight to calipers



I also ordered and installed an ohlins steering damper

Trackday
The front end started feeling a bit weird mid day so I couldn’t push as I wanted but had lost of fun with friends, bike felt very different with all the weight difference but I need it to find what was wrong with the forks
One of my fork legs was longer
Paid some money to have them taken apart and one of the preload adjusters had broken off inside
Solution was paid about 600 to fix it
Or about $1400 to add ohlins or Ktech inserts

$1400 is a lot of money for me so I Thought about it and decided to do the adult thing here..

Race switches from bike sport developments and Ducabike adjustable clip ons

Another find on Craigslist for like $20
Dollars
Racing electric connectors /plugs
Kickstand delete
Fan delete
Tail light delete I believe (can’t remember)
The only one I’m not using is the headlight delete as is used on LED light on the 1199 but since the 899 doesn’t have them it doesn’t throw a code or a light on the dash

At this point I still wasn’t jelling with the bike on lean angle so I decided to look for some adjustable Rearsets as I was still rocking the stock ones with rizoma pegs, I liked the grip but I thought I would feel better if they were s bit higher and further back
Narrowed down to woodcraft, bonamici or driven
And just before I ordered I searched one last time offer up and found these for sale

What… after I saw the pictures I saw the reason
Brake side main braket was bent
I started to google for parts and found out you can actually buy every single part separately
So I call the guys and picked the up the same day
Paid $45 dollars actually

Got home
Took them apart, printed the parts copy and highlighted what I needed

if I remember correctly, about $65 dollars in parts
I might still change the pegs eventually for the more aggressive ones but these are not bad for what i spent at the end

The panigales have a very narrow tank and at lean angle and hard breaking is hard to get a good grip on it.. to try to fix this I found this carbon fiber tank extension with Xline TechSpec side pads plus raceseats.Italy seat which is very grippy

Bike still had the stock masters with some “strada” shorty levers not sure if they are Chinese but were horrible abs the adjustment didn’t really work so I decided to upgrade
Brembo RCS 16 clutch and 19 brake

Thank you so much for sharing your BUILD journey with us, it's really fun and we all can relate to everything

Second,
After looking at your truck picture, I now really want to have a truck so I can carry my bike anywhere easily if needed... (and carry other things too

Third,
I personally can relate to your experience losing your friend.... I personally knew 5 people who was unfortunate
And I totally agree with you that riding on track will provide a much more safer and controlled environment. I am now thinking about riding on track once I am done with my 998...

A truck helps a lot, this is my first one tho.
got a house a few years ago and I like to work on it myself and do some projects so that meant a lot of Home Depot trips, now with trackdays is perfect to take the bike to the track.

yes, loosing a friend is not easy
I still remember he called me that morning to see if I was going to make it, waiting for me at the gas station our usual meet up spot before hitting the canyons. Who would of thought it was the last time I spoke to him!!

this year I just want to do as many trackdays as possible and maybe switch to race tires and get some tire warmers
